Chongqing’s Tongliang Dragon Dance Helps Usher in Times Square New Year’s Celebration

The Chinese Tongliang dragon dance from Chongqing China helped usher in the New Year celebration in Times Square New York Monday night, impressing the thousands gathered there and those watching around the world.

This year marked Chongqing's second year participating in the event, as it showcased the culture and natural beauty of the city, which is also becoming an innovative and ecological hub with world-class accommodation to support its growing technological and automotive industries. An electric car made in Chongqing was also displayed in Times Square during the countdown celebration.
 
“China welcomes everyone with open arms and encourages everyone to visit China,”: said Ambassador Huang in his opening remarks.

“Chongqing has over 3,000 years in history and it's becoming one of the biggest municipalities in China,” said Wang, Ding Guo of Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism Development. “We hope more visitors will visit Chongqing and explore its three gorges, experience its hot springs, taste its hot pot and see its giant pandas in person.”

“I’m so excited,” a Chinese-American who has lived in the US for 10 years and was attending the event said while adding that overseas Chinese were proud of a more prosperous China.

“It’s awesome! Fantastic!” Kohls, a New Yorker watching the live celebration added while expressing the hope that more Chinese performances like the dragon dance would be performed in the United States.

New York State Governor and New York City Mayor also sent congratulatory letters.
