2016 Youth International Culture Festival Media and Communications Youth summer Camp

August 2, 2016 - August 14: Sponsored by the Sino-American Friendship Association, the 2016 United States and China Youth International Cultural Festival was successfully held in New York City of the United States. The program aims to stimulate young people's interest in and participation in global affairs, deepen the professional aspirations and goals of young people, and promote mutual understanding and friendships between youth of the United States and China.

 

During the 14-day program, students and teachers visited schools such as Columbia and New York University to experience the atmosphere of these prestigious schools to help the youth camp participants set meaningful educational goals for their futures. The students then made their way to the Xinhua News Agency North American headquarters. There, they had the opportunity to listen to foreign correspondents about their experiences living and working abroad. Participants also went to Washington to visit the White House, Capitol Hill,  National Gallery of Art, and the John F.Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Through the tour students gained a new perspective on the history and culture of the United States and obtained a deeper understanding of how the U.S. political system works. In Boston, a small group of journalists also visited the University in Cambridge, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Boston's city center. They then returned to New York to visit the New York City government Council members and senior media personnel to gain a first-hand understanding of how the U.S. political system works by connecting directly with local political leaders in the community.

 

During the last activity of this year's Media and Communications Youth Summer Camp, students participated in "An Evening of Chinese Culture", an annual event hosted by SAFA and the New York Mets baseball team to promote Chinese culture and tourism. In addition to fun activities such as watching Chinese cultural and artistic performances, the students were able to observe how on-site interviews are conducted to pursue their dreams of working in media and journalism.
