“Charming Beijing, An Evening of Chinese Culture” Shines at Citi Field

On Saturday September 3, 2016 the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development hosted "Charming Beijing, An Evening of Chinese Culture" at the New York Mets Citi Field in conjunction with the MLB baseball game between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals.

This year's theme is to celebrate the rich historical and cultural background of Beijing,China's capital city and to promote Beijing as a world renowned travel destination for American tourists. Before the NY Mets took on the Washington Nationals for Saturday night's baseball game, traditional Chinese Beijing style dance performances, and Chinese calligraphy were featured live on stage in the Citi field stadium. During the game, a variety of videos displayed across the stadium's LED screens to highlight Beijing, China as a premiere global travel destination, bringing attention to the cities top attractions. In addition to Beijing's seven UNESCO world heritage tourism sites, Beijing's softer attractions include ancient Chinese style streets, alleys, and temples allowing traveler's to catch a glimpse into this unique cities' colorful past. Its imperial style parks, cozy courtyard residences, and famed Peking style cuisine fascinate international travelers that pour into the city every year. The cultural festivities extended to outside the stadium as event organizers presented a cultural tourism booth to introduce China's vibrant culture and Beijing's rich ancient history to American baseball fans with, A variety of complimentary surprises and Beijing travel information were provided to the curious baseball fans.

The event was hosted by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development and organized by the Sino-American Friendship Association and New York Mets. Ms. Yue Wang, Vice Chairwoman of Beijing Tourism was invited as an honorary guest and made the first pitch for the game.

Vice Chairwoman Yue Wang said, "although language can be a barrier to communication, tourism connects people from around the world to engage and interact beyond the limitations of speech alone." Li Li, Executive Vice President of the Sino-American Friendship Association also believes that tourism creates opportunities to enhance the US-China relationship by providing positive interactions based on friendship that have the power to reduce traditional barriers to communication and improve cross-cultural understanding. After the game, grand fireworks was set off at the Citi Field and brought the “Charming Beijing, An Evening of Chinese Culture” to a climax. Since 2009, the series of “An Evening of Chinese Culture” event have attracted over 200,000 fans to watch the Chinese culture and art performance during games.
